The Wa people are the original inhabitants of part of northeastern Myanmar, and the southwestern part of Yunnan Province in China. There are also Wa living in northern Thailand where they are not officially recognised as a minority ethnic group, but instead placed into the somewhat related minority group of Lawa people.
