English: Wayang is a term generally used for shadow puppet theatre in the malay world. There are many forms of wayang.
Wayang Kulit - shadow puppets of Wayang kulit as used in Java and Bali, which displays only the shadow instead of the figures itself.
Wayang Golek - full puppets.
Wayang Wong - dancers. The dancers sometimes wear masks, called wayan gedog or wayang topeng.
Wayang Potehi (Budaixi) - Southern Chinese puppets played by ethnic Chinese in Indonesia.
Wayang is practised not only on Java and Bali, but also on the islands of Lombok, Madura, Sumatra and Borneo. The stories are usually drawn from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata or the Serat Menak. Performances are typically accompanied by gamelan music. The Wayang Puppet Theatre was designated by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on 7 November, 2003.
