English: Wayside shrines are witnesses of public religiousness. They are mainly found in German spoken countries such as Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Southern Tyrol, but also in Slovenia and other countries around the Alps. Wayside shrines, portrayals of the way of the cross, altars of procession and free figured monuments can be seen in fields, forests, villages, at the sides of roads, rivers, etc.
