Hip hop

[edit]

I suspect that quite a bit here belongs (directly or indirectly) under Category:Hip hop culture, possibly by way of a category Category:Hip hop graffiti. Does anyone want to pursue this? - en:Jmabel | talk 19:58, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging

[edit]

A huge amount of the pics in this category, is in fact Tags of various sorts. I have created the new category:Tagging and hope pics will be migrated there with time. It can be debated if tags are graffiti at all, and if anyone more knowledgeable than me, can give good arguments the category should probably be moved elsewhere (including the large amount of pictures with tags). I think you should RhinoMind. But chose the most elegant tags, no scribble! — Blue Chip 2. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 83.254.131.185 (talk) 17:15, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

On deleting not so good graffiti.

[edit]

As admin says, this category is overcrowded. I could delete the less interesting stuff if you let me and tell me how that is done. Ph.D. in Art History, subject Graffiti — Blue Chip 2. Oct.31, 2018.

  • You need admin rights to delete.
  • We don't delete stuff just because it's not the best, let alone in someone's subjective opinion "less interesting". The solution is to diffuse the category to more specific categories (especially by country or by an even more specific location). - Jmabel ! talk 19:57, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Refining of categorization

[edit]

Hello, imho the graffiti created by an artist should not be categorized in the same category. Coming across all the images here, it crossed my mind that a Category:Graffiti used for vandalism or Category:Graffiti vandalism might be a possibility, or maybe someone could come up with a much better name for this "category". Wondeer if a concensus could be reached on this subject. Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 06:10, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Lotje: I sincerely doubt we could get any consensus on when graffiti constitutes art, and when it constitutes vandalism, and whether the two are mutually exclusive. Some have considered Banksy's work as vandalism, others count him as a major artist. And what about the graffiti visible in File:Seattle - Nova school 02.jpg? You'd have to determine whether it was done with or without the school's permission. - Jmabel ! talk 08:41, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel: thank you for coming back to me. Maybe, one day, someone comes along with the eureka solution. Do you think this image would be okay to add to Banksy (Q133600). At least, people whould know whom to look for...
About the image of Nova school, seems the Horace Mann Public School in Seattle is temporarily closed, so we could not ask them , or did I get this wrong? Cheers. Lotje (talk) 11:45, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have no opinion on adding that image to Wikidata.
As for the school: it was temporarily closed when I shot the photo 14 years ago. (Hasn't been the Horace Mann School in decades, but people still call the building that.) It's definitely re-opened, I think now as "Nova High School" rather than "Nova Public Alternative High School", but I doubt that there would be enough institutional memory to remember whether the graffiti was authorized. It was high-quality and consistent in style (see https://www.flickr.com/photos/jmabel/albums/72157615832353777/; unlike the photo here, not de minimis, so not uploaded to Commons), so it wouldn't surprise me if it was authorized. - Jmabel ! talk 18:48, 9 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Jmabel. Very interesting subject though, this kind of school in the United States. Though, a bit weird to read the Also I think it is an authorized graffiti (by the students ). Lotje (talk) 05:56, 10 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
