Category:National Park Service is ambiguous on Commons since many some countries have the same or similar government agencies. Category:United States National Park Service is consistent with naming on English Wikipedia (w:Category:United States National Park Service). Walter Siegmund (talk) 22:45, 8 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you give some exemples of similar government agencies? This is a reasonable request, but I am not convinced we need this move. --Juiced lemon 06:53, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I find the following, but not as many as I anticipated. Another issue that I didn't mention above is that "National Park Service" may appear to some to be a manifestation of American centricity and, hence, inappropriate in an international cooperative project. Walter Siegmund (talk) 02:19, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Galapagos National Park Service [1]
  • Korea National Park Service [2]
  • Costa Rican National Park Service [3]
“Korea National Park Service” is another kind of centricity. I think centricity is no more acceptable in other wikis than in Commons; so, I suggest you do rename first w:National Park Service in the en: Wikipedia. --Juiced lemon 08:56, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Closed discussion with the result of No consensus. Walter Siegmund (talk) 18:21, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Earlier, I proposed moving Category:National Park Service to Category:United States National Park Service. That discussion closed with no consensus. Please see Category talk:National Park Service. I think that the main arguments for moving Category:United States National Park Service to Category:National Park Service are that it is more concise and, as far as I've been able to determine, unambiguous. Regarding the latter point, the names of some government agencies in non-English speaking countries are translated into English as National Park Service, but the name of the agency in the official language of the country is not National Park Service. • I agree with the move. Seems to be rather straightforward...I'm thinking that combining these categories into National Park Service should fine. Maybe toss this over to the Commons Village Pump to get more feedback?--MONGO 03:33, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support. The organization name is National Park Service and not United States National Park Service (United States government probably invented the concept). The English Wikipedia uses the concise name, and there is no evidence that the concise name would be ambiguous in Commons. --Juiced lemon 07:44, 4 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Post merge discussion[edit]

Keep the old name, because NP do not only exist in the U.S. See Canadian National Parks Mattes 06:33, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is true that national parks may be found in many countries. However, :w:Canadian National Parks is operated by Parks Canada Agency so no confusion exists with w:National Park Service.Walter Siegmund (talk) 16:33, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
