Fumeroles / volcanic degassing[edit]

@Reykholt: You once described steam vents as "a special kind of big fumaroles" in which "the steam is escaping in bigger quantities". Can you explain why the category should be a sub-category of Category:Volcanic degassing instead of Category:Fumaroles (itself in Category:Volcanic degassing) and Category:Steam? - Themightyquill (talk) 23:36, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Could be ok have it in both categories (Category:Fumaroles and Category:Fumaroles) as long as "steam" is not thought to be "pure water vapour".Reykholt (talk) 07:25, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
My point is that it shouldn't be in Category:Volcanic degassing. See Commons:Categories - except in special circumstances, a nothing should be a child and grandchild of the same category. - Themightyquill (talk) 09:53, 12 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Reykholt and Themightyquill: I don't understand why there is a category tree for steam vents separately from fumaroles. How is a uploader supposed to know which category to place photographs in? How is a Commons user supposed to know which one to look in? — hike395 (talk) 13:33, 27 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
