Program Goals and Status for FY18/19

Segment 2 - Search Platform

• Program Goals for FY18/19: By the end of the program (Dec 2019), Structured Data on Commons will make Commons more used by making it easier to edit, upload, and find media metadata. At least five million files will contain structured elements. This year, we’ll make progress on these goals by completing major features, supporting tool development, and doing programmatic outreach.

It is easier for people to discover, learn, and manage the free media stored on Commons and thereby incentivize higher contribution rates.

Commons search will be extended via CirrusSearch and Elasticsearch and Wikidata Query Service, to support searching based on structured data elements describing media.

• in progress The collaboration between the Multimedia team and Search Platform team is on-going; however we are running into data quality issues that need to be fixed before a lot of the search queries can work better.

• This is still a work in progress, but mostly in a partially done status with a bit more investigative work to do in Q2.

Designs for this type of search is still ongoing and we don't have any specific work to do right at this moment.

Through incremental Search Platform component improvements, teams and developers can deliver more and better ways for readers and editors to search for content across languages.

Specific media search filters for Wikidata/Wikibase and the relationships to the topics they represent will be better supported using structured data and other techniques.

Primary team: Search Platform. Dependencies on: WMDE, Multimedia teams

• Search will review SDC designs, but no specific platform work is being requested from SDC for Q3

We have ongoing discussions with SDC and are working on a few questions (perceived slowness in index updates and a warning that doesn't need to be showing on beta Commons).

• Fix query highlighting in Cirrus (T217809)
• Fix and implement query dispatching issue:
  • decide on solutions for extensions that require very specific search queries and how to combine them on Commons and Wikibase

• We started the query highlighting and dispatching work, but was  postponed due to other emergent / urgent work that was of a higher priority in this quarter. We hope to work on this in June 2019, but probably won't be able to finish it in this quarter.

• Query highlighting is (fixed)  Done but we need a bit of refactoring to be completed.
