Commons:Världskulturmuseerna/da
The National Museums of World Culture (Swedish: Statens museer för världskultur) is a Swedish governmental agency responsible for ethnographic, archaeologic and fine arts collections from all parts of the world. It is state funded and governed by the Ministry of Culture. The agency runs four museums located in Stockholm and Gothenburg:
- Museum of World Culture (Världskulturmuseet)
- Museum of Mediterranean and Near Eastern Antiquities (Medelhavsmuseet)
- Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities (Östasiatiska museet)
- Museum of Ethnography (Etnografiska museet)
The museums holds rich collections of objects, and also of photography documenting many parts of the world during the period after ca 1850. The Swedish National Museums of World Cultures is responsible for displaying and bringing to life the various cultures of our world, in particular cultures outside of Sweden. Furthermore, the agency is to document and illustrate different cultural manifestations and conditions as well as cultural encounters and variations from a historical, contemporary, national and international perspective. Finally, the agency shall promote interdisciplinary knowledge and various forms of public activities.
The Contribution
In 2017 two collections were selected to be made available online as part of the Connected Open Heritage project, an initiative to preserve cultural heritage online and give people all over the world easy access to it.
The first collection depicts Sigvald Linné expedition to Mexiko in 1932 and consists of nearly 1,300 images. This was the first of two expeditions to Mexico that Sigvald Linné did in the 1930s. During this expedition Linné made excavations at Teotihuacan but he also travelled around to other sites in Mexico and took a lot of pictures of Chichen Itza, Mitla, Monte Alban and many other sites. He also took pictures of the landscape, villages and cities.
The second depicts the Swedish Cyprus Expedition 1927–1931 and consists of 604 images. The photos are important documentation of the archaeological excavations at various locations in Cyprus, transport of the findings to Stockholm and curatorial/exhibiting work there. They also give glimpses of the everyday life, hard work and festivities of both Swedish archaeologists and local workers in the late 1920s.
In 2018 this was followed up by images from the Museum of World Culture collections of the Walter Kaudern expeditions to Madagascar and Sulawesi (858 images) and a further (1745 images) from various Nordenskiöld and von Rosen expeditions to South and Central America and one expedition starting in Cape Town and moving north all the way to Alexandria.
