User scripts[edit]

I'm not familiar with Javascript, but it seems to me that many Commons cleanup tasks could be aided with some user scripts. For example, after seeing Template:Incomplete license, it seems like it must be pretty straightforward to write a script that adds a tab to each image, "tag as incomplete license." It could then insert this template, as well as automatically leave some generic warning/info template on the uploader's talk page.

The only one I know of at the moment is the one that adds a check-usage tab to each image page. Are there any others? pfctdayelise 04:09, 12 January 2006 (UTC)

Just for the record (you know it already ;-): See Commons:Tool integration. Arnomane 17:50, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Does anyone know any way to force Picasa to upload pix directly to commons? It would really be nice and handy... Halibutt 15:46, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

I think this is an IMPORTANT and urgant Point, becauce Picasa 'supports now Creative Commons' like flickr!!! HBR (talk) 19:53, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
Nowbody any Idea?
Especealy we need a tool for searching picasa with CC licenz like there are many for flickr!
HBR (talk) 18:26, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
I did some looking around and reading. It seems that there is no way to search Picasa yet by CC license. See this Feb 7, 2009 thread:
Picasa now allows uploaders to pick any CC license for their image. See:
But no way yet to search Picasa by specific CC license. --Timeshifter (talk) 20:34, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
So we hope for the future. ;-( HBR (talk) 20:36, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Here is a Picasa page on CC licenses: --Timeshifter (talk) 20:28, 27 March 2009 (UTC)

mass deletion tool[edit]

Is there a mass deletion tool? It would really help to clean up Commons:Deletion requests/Superseded, for instance deleting all the Autobahn and Texas road shields in one go. --ALE! ¿…? 07:07, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

tool server / database time lag[edit]

Could somebody explain, why the databse used for the tool server is such much behind? I thought that the time lag of the English Wikipedia should be reduced. But instead the time lag for all other is already over one day and increasing. --ALE! ¿…? 17:12, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Mass export[edit]

Great tools, but... is there a tool to mass export images ? MarcBot 09:33, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I'm looking for the tool that lists articles that are missing images in the local Wikipedia, but through interwikilinks from that article finds out that there are commons-images available for the topic. //Knuckles 10:35, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I think you want the FIST (Free Image Search Tool). pfctdayelise (说什么?) 11:40, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Tools down?[edit]

Tools are down for weeks now (like the "tool server mediasearch", or the "check usage" tab tool). Any reason, or estimate when they will be up again? Ingolfson 08:53, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

I get 500 server errors, by the way. Since sometime in middle January, I think. Always tended to work before. Ingolfson 08:56, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Tool to find out image source[edit]

I am an Admin on and know there have been several images without a proper/correct licencing tag, is there any tool which can be used to find the source of the image from Internet? I remember coming across somthing that said that a specific user/tool/bot works to find out the source of Image to check whether it is copyrighted. Is anybody of aware of it?--Dsvyas (talk) 12:08, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

It is the tineye tab on top of every image page - if you activate it in your preferences / Gadgets / Maintenance Tools --Jarekt (talk) 14:53, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Tineye shows other locations of the image on the web. It does not say which one is the original source (if any), nor whether the image is copyrighted or not. People copy images from wherever they find them, and it is frequently difficult to find the original source. Tineye helps in that effort. --Timeshifter (talk) 23:15, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Thank you Jarekt for the info, I have now activated Tineye. Timeshifter, THank you too, I basically wanted to find other locations only, I know it is very difficult to identify which is the original source, but even if we could trace its other locations, and few of them are copyrighted, the use of it here becomes doubtfull, doesn't it?--Dsvyas (talk) 09:02, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Upload media is dishonest, methods don't work for video or audio[edit]

The whole issue of OGG/Theora encoding makes the "Upload media" section generally dishonest, unhelpful, and basically useless for someone trying to accomplish that. Most of these media tools don't apply to that sort of media, so generalizing as media is too non-specific.

The "Upload media" section should be renamed to "Uploading still images and GIFs", and there should be a new section exclusively for "Uploading video and audio" that can cover those details.

If there are no objections I will be bold and do it myself. DMahalko (talk) 00:48, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

New Upload Tool - Testers Wanted![edit]

Hi all, I've been working on a new Commons upload tool (Up!) which greatly simplifies the upload process. Up! is currently in alpha release, and I could really use some help testing this tool. If you're interested, please add your name to Commons:Up!#Testers and upload away :] Cheers, FASTILY (TALK) 19:54, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

Image use by category[edit]

Is there a tool that'll show me image use across wikipedias based on a category argument? thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 01:11, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Ah. Answered at GLAM Tools --01:58, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

List of uploaded images[edit]

What's the best tool to make a tabular (HTML table, CSV or TXT) list of uploaded files by user? Just plain list of all uploaded images, without any thumbnails. I'm looking for equivalent tool to [1]—that tool seems to be inactive. dariusz woźniak (talk) 17:52, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
