Painter + Publisher

How to make category names correctly: "Category:Postcards of PainterName by PublisherName" or "Category:Postcards of PublisherName by PainterName"? Other alternative? My English is very, very bad.... :( --Gandvik (talk) 08:01, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

@Gandvik: Why not add two categories to this postcards? Alternative: "Category:Postcards published by PublisherName painted by PainterName". I think the phrase "published by" should be used. Did you have an example, where this deep categories are useful. If you are not sure with your translation in English, you can use ru:DeepL. --sk (talk) 12:16, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
@Stefan Kühn. For example: Category:Postcards of art by Ilya Lapin that I am uploading images of now. This series of postcards has been printed for about 40 years and contains more than 10,000 postcards (possibly 15,000). With such a large number, it is necessary to create subcategories by authors. For example - Elizaveta Bem‎. There are 73 of her postcards in this series by Ilya Lapin and several hundred more postcards in other series by other publishers. I am creating a Category:Postcards of art by Ilya Lapin by Elizaveta Bem that is included in a Category:Postcards of art by Ilya Lapin by artist (along with other authors in this series) and also included in a Category:Postcards by Elizaveta Bem (along with her postcards from other publishers). Is this the right name for this category? I'm not sure... --Gandvik (talk) 15:10, 11 January 2023 (UTC)
@Gandvik: Thanks for this example. Every postcard should get one "combined" category like Category:Postcards by Elizaveta Bem published by Ilya Lapin. This "combined" category is then a subcategory Category:Postcards published by Ilya Lapin and Category:Postcards by Elizaveta Bem. I would named first in the "combined" category the artist, because this is the main feature of this postcard. So I think the best name for this categories is "Category:Postcards by PainterName published by PublisherName". --sk (talk) 13:12, 13 January 2023 (UTC)

Postcards & Proverbs

I want to create a category dedicated to proverbs (In the Category:Postcards by subject). In Russian postcards it's like this: on a postcard there is a proverb and a picture that humorously depicts it. What would be a good name? Variants: Category:Proverbs postcards, Category:Postcards of proverbs, Category:Postcards with proverbs...? Other options? --Gandvik (talk) 20:48, 20 January 2023 (UTC)

@Gandvik: Deepl says Category:Postcards with proverbs. We should sort this postcards also by languages. Like Category:Postcards with proverbs by language and Category:Postcards with proverbs in Russian and Category:Postcards with proverbs in Russian. All should be under Category:Postcards containing text. --sk (talk) 06:26, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

OCR Tool for Commons

@Rc1959: Today I found this tool ocr-test.wmcloud.org. I test it with some postcards (Example) and was fascinated by the results. I remember your talk about Optical character recognition, automatic processing.. Maybe this tool is also useful for you. --sk (talk) 15:27, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Sweet. That would be awesome for transcribing handwritten messages on the backs of postcards. I tried it on a few of them and the results were surprisingly good. --Adamant1 (talk) 16:20, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
Wow !
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9a/Aulnay-sous-Bois.Boulevard_de_Strasbourg.Route_de_Bondy.jpg
"7224. AULNAY-sous-BOIS (S.-et-0.)
Boulevard de Strasbourg
et Route de Bondy E.M.7224. AULNAY-sous-BOIS (S.-et-0.)
Boulevard de Strasbourg
et Route de Bondy E.M."
... plus a lot of text from the image itself. I am a m a z e d ! Thanks !! Rc1959 (talk) 16:26, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
Another example with:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Diamond_Mine_Disaster_Memorial_Victim_Plaque,_Diamond,_Illinois.jpg
"Diamond Mine Disaster Memorial Victim Plaque"
"IN COMMEMORATION
OF THOSE WHO DIED
IN THE DIAMOND MINE DISASTER
FEBRUARY 16, 1883
NUMBER OF KNOWN VICTIMS 74
BODIES RECOVERED 28
ANDERSON JOHN COOTES JOS.
MURRAY FRANK RABBART R.
GROTER D.
RABBART AUG.
RAMSEY HUGH
REDMOND MAT.
etc..."
It opens the possibility to re-index all images in Commons , images taken years ago !!!

@Rc1959, Adamant1: If you get a good OCR result for an image then you can save it in an annotation. Like I did in this postcard. Also I did it in some other postcards with the publishers like in this postcard. With the text in this annotaions it really usefull for fulltext searches. --sk (talk) 18:30, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

Marmuse publisher

I could not find a publisher category for "Marmuse". Should we create it in Category:Postcards by publisher ? Thanks. Rc1959 (talk) 08:06, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

@Rc1959: Yes, please create a new category for this publisher and then add this category to Category:Postcard publishers
and Category:Publishers by name. --sk (talk) 09:28, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
