Theleader sprang; but those death-dealing fangsclosed only on a solid mass of horn, and back ofthat was a force that crushed his head againsthimself, and dashed him at his friend behindwith such a fearful vim that both were hurledover the cliff to perish on the rocks. On camethe rest. The Ram had no time to back up fora charge, but a sweep of that great head wasenough. The points, forefronting now, as theydid when he was a Lamb, speared and hurled 78

None but a mad Wolf could have failedto take warning ; but on he came, and Krag, insavage glory of the fight, let loose that livingthunderbolt,—himself,—and met the last of thefurry monsters with a shock that crushed himflat against the rock, then picked him up on hishorns as he might a rag, and hurled him farthestyet, and standing on the edge he watched himwhirl and gasp till swallowed in the chasm. The great Ram raised his splendid head,blew a long blast from his nostrils, like a war-horse, and gazed a moment to see if more werecoming; then turned and lightly bounded afterthe Ewes he had so ably guarded. From his hiding-place young Lee took in thewhole scene with eager, sparkling eyes. Onlyfifty yards away from him it had passed. He was an easy mark — fifty yards, standing;he was a splendid mark, all far beyond oldScottys wildest talk.
