Summary
[edit]DescriptionNewport Bridge, New Cut - geograph.org.uk - 287616.jpg |
English: Newport Bridge, New Cut A full frontal view of this bridge built by Dorman Long and opened in 1934. At the time this was the heaviest vertical lift bridge in the world and the first in this country. During the busiest period of river traffic between the wars the bridge was lift a total of 1,400 times in one week! The bridge has now been bolted down to reduce maintenance costs.
This stretch of the River Tees is known as the New Cut and was dug in 1831 to avoid a large meander of the river which over the years has gradually been filled in. |
