At an early hour in the morning Big Ben Raynor andthree or four men had departed for a gulch a dozen milesaway to purchase supplies, and this was the party, safelyreturned, which had the boy in charge, for the child was aboy—a handsome little fellow about four years old. Theyhad found him on the trail beside a dead man—a grizzlyold miner who was apparently coming up to the Diggings,but whose strength gave out when five miles distant. Ourmen tried to solve the mystery, but there wasnt a scrap ofwriting about the dead man to establish his identity, andthe boy had but one answer to all inquiries: Im Jacks boy!
