Summary

[edit]
Description
English: 'Christina' statue at Workhouse Bridge Christina Collins took passage on a fly packet boat from Preston Brook to London in June 1839 for the sum of eighteen pence. After leaving Stoke the boat's crew took to drinking and Christina feared for her safety. She raised her fears at the Toll Office in Stone and was advised to report the men at the end of the journey. Her fears were justified as she was raped and thrown overboard between Stone and Rugeley. Her body was recovered at Brindley Bank and carried up the 'Bloody Steps' 1435617. Two of the men were hung for murder at Stafford and a third transported to Australia.
