Summary[edit]

Author
Paul Constantin La Fargue
Description
English: 'Félicitié' driven ashore at Scheveningen by the 'Richmond', 24 January 1761

This was a minor Anglo-French action during the Seven Years War. It involved the 'Félicité' which had just left Cherbourg on her way to Martinique when she was met by the 'Richmond', Captain John Elphinstone. The action was begun at sea but continued when both ships ran ashore at Scheveningen on the Dutch coast. After the French crew fled the 'Félicité', she was boarded and set on fire. La Fargue, a landscape painter, printmaker and watercolourist, was born nearby at The Hague. He spent most of his life illustrating the environs of The Hague and may have witnessed this newsworthy event or its aftermath, of which he made this detailed record.
