Description De eerste Hortus Botanicus werd in 1738 opgericht aan de overkant van de straat. Uitbreiding bleek algauw noodzakelijk. In 1819 werd een nieuwe botanische tuin aangelegd op het terrein van een gesloopt Kapucijnenklooster, de huidige locatie. De ontwerpers waren architect Charles vander Straeten (1771-1834) en hoofdtuinier Andreas Donkelaar (1783-1858). De botanicaschool werd opgebouwd volgens de plantensystematiek van Linnaeus. Vanaf 1835 werd de tuin overgedragen aan de stad Leuven. In 1982 werd de oranjerie in haar oorspronkelijke staat gerenoveerd en werd er een nieuwe tropische serre geplaatst. Begin jaren '90 werd de watertuin aangelegd, gevolgd door de fruittuin en de verzonken tuin.
