Summary[edit]

Author
Admiral Sir Edward Gennys Fanshawe
Description
English: 'Navarino [Pylos], Septr 26th 1857' [Greece]

No. 23 in Fanshawe's Baltic and later album, 1843 - 83. Captioned by the artist on the album page below the image, as title. The tenth of a series of drawings of the Mediterranean fleet's summer cruise, from Malta and back, between 3 June and 7 November 1857. This monochrome wash view appears to be looking roughly south-west across the bay of Navarino towards the long island of Sphacteria, which closes it off from the Ionian Sea. The ships on the left are at anchor near Navarino itself below the peak shown, though the town is not, and may include Fanshawe's. If so he may have landed and climbed the hilll to his viewpoint from one of the boats shown moored by the shore in the middle ground below. For further detail see PAI4694.
