Description

Wasatch beardtongue (Penstemon cyananthus), Plantain family (Plantaginaceae). Tony Grove in Logan Canyon, Utah.

One of the flowers, growing on the top of the inflorescence, was oriented vertically and displayed almost perfect symmetry. In normal zygomorphic (asymmetrical) flower, there are four perfect stamens with the fifth one converted into a infertile staminode. In this flower, however, all five stamens are perfect.
