[edit]Description42 Cricklade Street, Swindon - geograph.org.uk - 598850.jpg |
English: 42 Cricklade Street, Swindon. This is the same building as in this image 399143. It was built in 1729 and was until recently occupied by a firm of solicitors. The building is being converted to residential accommodation. It has been described as "...the finest surviving 18th century house in Swindon. It was occupied by Robert Harding (d. 1770) and then by 1773 by Thomas Vilett. The front is of five bays and two stories, of brick with elaborate stone dressings, which include a central doorway surmounted by a segmental pediment and flanked by pilasters, a Venetian window above, grotesque masks on the keystones of the other windows,[e.g. 598896 ] and broad pilasters at the angles. The whole is crowned by a wide dentil cornice and a central pediment flanked by balustraded parapets. Internally there is a contemporary staircase. Bow windows in the side walls were added in ca. 1800." ('A history of Swindon', Crittall, Rogers and Shrimpton, Inst. of Historical Research, 1970). It is listed Grade II* National Heritage List for England |
