Summary

[edit]
Author
Willem Van de Velde, the Younger
Description
English: A Guinea merchant ship drying sails

A near but rapid sketch of a two-decked merchant ship from slightly before the port beam. Fore course and topsail loosed and hauled out to a bowline; main and mizzen topsails and mizzen filled. At the spritsail topmasthead is the Guinea jack, a cross on a flag with a chequey border.

This is an unsigned pencil and wash drawing by the Younger.

The sails have been traced on the back, probably by a later hand. This drawing is nearer to the Elder’s work and it is possible that some of the wash has been added by him.
