t tone—from a profusion of tender touchesof a grey tint, in the architectural parts of the orna-ments—struck me as among the most pleasing speci-mens of the kind I had ever seen. The gilding, in manyof the subjects, seems to have been retouched. That illustrious lady issitting, in a chair, surrounded by her attendants; andis in all probabihty a copy from the life. I could notresist the impulse of getting a fac-simile of this repre-sentation of her made by M. Coeure ; who has reallyperformed his task with equal felicity and effect. I amsure you will be pleased with it, and so I send it you.*The performance is a metrical composition, in stanzasof eleven verses. I select the opening lines, becausethey relate immediately to the portrait in question. €rcj9f tutWmtt iHu^trc ^ magnificqiie f leur tie iioblc^^c cjrqui^c ct r
