Even in the times of the Republicit was a spacious temple, as the Senate oftentimes assembled here.The splendor of the pillars, indeed, has passed away, but still wedistinctly make out stairs ascending in terraces and leading to anante-structure, behind which the broad temple projected on bothsides. In it the Senate had convened in crowded assembly on thatmemorable 3d of December, when Cicero held in his hand theevidence against the Catilinarian conspirators, obtained throughthe ambassadors of the Allobroges. The conference lasted untilevening. Impatiently the populace streamed up and down beforethe stairs of the temple, when at last the Consul, emerging fromthe mysterious interior (cello) of the temple, informed the appre-hensive citizens (Quirites) that he had removed the impending 28 CICEROS THIRD ORATION AGAINST CATILINE.
