xamination of the stomachs of over twohundred Kingbirds by Professor Beal, of theAgricultural Department at Washington, re-vealed the fact that only fourteen of the totalnumber had any bees at all in them, and thosewere mostly drones ; while sixty per cent of thecontents of these stomachs consisted of injuriousinsects. Every protection should be given tothese benefactors of the farmer, and they willmore and more come to live and nest in ourorchards. Though a King of the Birds, he is not,as is generally supposed, a tyrant king, un-less he is very unlike his eastern counterpart,**The King-bird. On the other hand, likethe bulldog among dogs (unless the bulldoghas been spoiled in training), the bird is justand tolerant. He is rare in theWillamette Valley and southwestern Washing-ton, but is not uncommon in eastern Oregon andWashington, and is reported as not rare aboutPuget Sound. In the North Atlantic States, he is to be foundat every turn. He sits upon the top of a treefrom twenty to thirty feet high, watching for thehapless insect, and on guard against bird-ene-mies of all kinds.
