Fiddlesticks about my grandfather ! saidFred. In the practical experiences of the last threedays my faith in Freds tales had more thanonce been rather rudely shaken ; but the con-temptuous tone in which he disposed of ourmodel, the Great Sea-Captain, startled me soseverely that I do not think I felt any addi-tional shock of astonishment when stronghands lifted the tarpaulin from our heads, and- grave amid several grinning faces - - wesaw the bargemaster. TakeFred home if he wants to go, and tell themthat Im all right, and mean to do my dutyand come back a credit to them. Mr. Rowes face was inscrutable, and Ipleaded harder. Youre an old navy man, you know, Rowe,I said, and if you recommended me to the cap-tain of one of these ships for a cabin-boy, Illbe bound theyd take me. Mr. Charles, said the old man earnestly, youcouldnt go for a cabin-boy ; you dont know- You think I cant rough it, I interruptedimpatiently, but try me, and see. I knowwhat Im after, I added consequentially,
