r at Holkham Hall. The existing frescoesare by Vasari, Ligozzi, Passignano, and Cigoli, andillustrate the principal battles in the history of the Medici. They representthe lowest decadence ofFlorentine painting, as dothe marble groups aroundthat of sculpture. Beyond are the Sale deMedici,formerly of Leo X.,also decorated by Vasariand his pupils, now used aspublic offices. On the second floor isthe Sala dell Orologio ordei Gigli, one entire wallof which is frescoed byDomenico Ghirlandaio, *one of his finest works,executed between 1481 and 1485. He painted in the Palazzo delta Signoria, in thehall where is the marvellous clock of Lorenzo dellaVolpaia, some figures of Florentine Saints, with mostbeautiful decorations.^^ (Vas. iii. 269.) It is divided into three parts. In the centre isenthroned the colossal figure of S. Zanobi beneath aportico, between two deacons, one of which has beenalmost destroyed in constructing the doorway.
