r at Holkham Hall. The existing frescoesare by Vasari, Ligozzi, Passignano, and Cigoli, andillustrate the principal battles in the history of the Medici. They representthe lowest decadence ofFlorentine painting, as dothe marble groups aroundthat of sculpture. Beyond are the Sale deMedici,formerly of Leo X.,also decorated by Vasariand his pupils, now used aspublic offices. On the second floor isthe Sala dell Orologio ordei Gigli, one entire wallof which is frescoed byDomenico Ghirlandaio, *one of his finest works,executed between 1481 and 1485. He painted in the Palazzo delta Signoria, in thehall where is the marvellous clock of Lorenzo dellaVolpaia, some figures of Florentine Saints, with mostbeautiful decorations.^^ (Vas. iii. 269.) It is divided into three parts. In the centre isenthroned the colossal figure of S. Zanobi beneath aportico, between two deacons, one of which has beenalmost destroyed in constructing the doorway. SECOND FLOOR 275 two Angels, and below on either side is a colossallion holding a standard, on the one side with the Lily,on the other with the Cross of the Republic, a superbdecoration. To the left beyond the portico are seenthe Duomo, the Baptistery, and the Campanile. Thishas the interest of showing the fai^ade of the Duomoas it existed in the XV century. The wall on eitherside is painted with Roman Triumph arches, on whichstand six fine and well-posed figures of illustriousRomans—on the right, Decius, Scipio, and Cicero;on the left Brutus, Scaevola, and Camillus. In theangles are medallions with the heads of the RomanEmperors. Beyond, on the same floor, is the Cappella diS. Bernardo or dei Priori, later used by Eleonora ofToledo. The roof is painted by Ridolfo Ghirlandaioin imitation of mosaic.
