ParadiseOrcaqna. S. Maria Novella. Orcagna in space-filling, on the divided scenes of theGiottesques, is remarkable. Some of the figures havegreat beauty. All are, however, much repainted. 192 S. MARIA NOVELLA (Right Wall.) The Inferno. The composition follows closely the Dantesque con-ception. It is the work of Leonardo Orcagna, and ismuch inferior to the Paradise. The frescoes were entirely repainted in the XVIIIcentury, and probably little but composition and out-lines remain of the original work. *(On Altar.) ANDREA ORCAGNA. ChristEnthroned with Saints. 1357. T.w. This and the frescoes are the only surviving paintedwork of Orcagna. In the centre Christ, with Saintson either side, gives the Keys to S. Peter, who kneelsin the foreground, and a Book to S. Thomas Aquinas,whom the Virgin presents.
