Adult Female.—General colour above brown, finely barredwith black ; a collar of black white-tipped feathers surroundingthe neck; nape a7id upper-part of chest rust-colour; most of PLATE XLII.

THE PLAIN WANDERERS. 291 the feathers of the top of the head, back and shoulder-feathersmargined with whitish-buff, and with the vanes free, giving theplumage a Rhea-like appearance; chin and middle of throatwhite; breast and rest of under-parts buff barred with black,except in the middle of the belly. Total length, 6*3 inches;wing, 4; tail, i*6; tarsus, i. Kange.—Australia; New South Wales, Victoria, South Aus-tralia, and the interior. Hatits.—Sir George Grey says:—These birds are migra-tory ; they appear at Adelaide in June, and disappear aboutJanuary; where they go has not yet been ascertained. Theynever fly if they can avoid so doing, and are often caught bydogs; when disturbed they crouch down and endeavour to hidethemselves in a tuft of grass. While running about they are inthe habit of raising themselves in a nearly perpendicular posi-tion on the extremities of their toes, so that the hinder partof the foot does not touch the gro
