After the disastrous ending ofthe First Punic War, the Carthaginians sought to repair their lossesby new conquests in Spain. Hamilcar Barca was sent over into thatcountry, and for nine years he devoted his commanding genius toorganizing the different Iberian tribes into a compact state, and todeveloping the rich gold and silver mines of the southern part of thepeninsula.
