Fig-. 193. Interior of St. Marks. The four lesser arches enclose each a small, plain, round-headedwindow, the head of the arch being filled with mosaic. All thearches are surrounded by carved archivolts, — that of the centralarch much the largest and richest, — and all are surmounted byogee gables decorated with wildly extravagant crockets, consisting ofstatues and masses of foliage, and terminated by finials carryingstatues. Between the gables and at the angles of the facade are tallpinnacles with arched canopies enclosing statues and capped withspires.
