rs.The same month, August, 1798, the church obtainedleave of Presbytery to prosecute their call before thePresbytery of Albany. Dr. Smith accepted the callupon condition that he should not be expected to enterupon his duties before the first of the following April,and that this proposal be laid before the congregationfor consideration. The congregation at once met, andagreed to the proposition. We may be sure that theeight months which Dr. Smith asked were faithfullyused in putting things in order for the college beforehis leaving that institution. The heart of Pine Street was buoyant with hope.The people renewed their diligence. A minute of thecommittee records that the treasurer had, near thistime, invested a surplus of two thousand dollars ingovernment bonds at eight per cent. This is a verysignificant sidelight. They were well prepared toreceive again the pastor of their love. They gladlypaid the expenses of bringing him back to Philadelphia,and treated him with the same royal liberality thatmarked the event of his first appearance among them.How little they thought of the preparation they weremaking for a more sorrowful generosity when theyshould build the tomb over his grave, and give, a purseof a thousand dollars to his bereft widow! Dr. Smith was received again into the Presbytery ofPhiladelphia in April, and installed in June, 1799. Itwas on the twenty-seventh of the latter month that theinstallation services were held at ten in the morning.Dr. Blair presided, Dr. Tennent preached the sermon,and Rev. Mr. Irwin gave the charge.
