It was GeneralSteele who took the lead in the churchs second fightfor independence. 2 Another octogenarian and prominent officer of thechurch, whose tomb is directly behind the church alongthe walk, was Colonel William Linnard, the faithfultreasurer of the church for more than a generation,who built the galleries in 1793. William Linnardwas commissioned Captain-Lieutenant in the SixthCompany of Colonel Jehu Eyres Artillery Battalion,August 27, 1777, which attempted to prevent the Brit-ish crossing the Brandywine at Pyles Ford.
