TheEquitable building was constructed in 1870; it was Innlt with gran-ite front walls, in the prevailing French style, with ^Mansard roof.The Ulterior construction was of masonry partition walls, iron beamsand segmental brick arches. It was originally five stories high.Jer. T. Smith was the mason, J. G. Batterson the granite contrac-tor, and J. B. & J. M. Cornell the iron contractors. In 1887 thebuilding was enlarged to its present symmetrical dimensions, Geo.B. Post being the architect and David H. King, Jr.. the builder. In
