! January 19th, Sam sa3s : I have been in the Hospittle and dont like it I tellyou : The doctor called it the Reumatic Fever. I ammost over it now and got back to my tent and been out fivedays but dont do much dutey now. I got that bundle andthimble and tweezers, the tweezers is just what I wantedto pull out thorns and slivers, it is an awful place forslivers and such.

CHAS. A. BOWEN, OUARTERMASTER. New Hampshire Volunteers. 39 It will be seen that Sam doesnt squawk and com-plain much ; he is of good pluck and calclates to livethrough it — as he did. He sends home his money to buy Land with and courts Nettie honorably. He is aline specimen of the average New England boy of seven-teen years adrift upon the turbulence of 1861. R. Howarth, Jr., who was of about the same age (18),rises to say that: Co. B to which I belonged, was tilled up from the origi-nal 30 by men from Exeter Company. Its maximum num-ber at one time was 117 men. The whole regiment beforeit left Camp Currier consisted of 1,007 men. While there,the companies were placed alphabetically from A to K,but afterwards changed according to the seniority of thecaptains. The men were there fully armed and equipped,and tor an offensive weapon shouldered the Austrianrifle, a very poor article. Its weight sagged down manyof the tender youth who had before only occasionallyswung the axe at the hom
