see.One of these drug boxes, in the possession of A. H.Cassel, was given to him by the Leibert family, whosay it was bought by Peter Leibert at the Sower sale. These boxes, moreover, w^ere in three sizes,—quart,half-gallon, and gallon. They were made for Sowerby Heinrich Fry, an expert wood-turner, who came toPennsylvania as early as the days of Penn. He madethem for the first Sower. This should be conclusive.But still more remarkable is the fact that one of thethree boxes now in my possession contained assa-foetida. To prevent the odor from escaping, theinside of the lid was filled with a scrap of paper whichmade a perfect seal. Upon this paper the writernoticed a stain. Then carefully removing the paperhe was. rejoiced to find upon it these words in a plainhand, Christopher Sower, Printer, Germantown, Pa.This is absolute proof. The sad event is record-ed in his diary as follows: Sept. 25, 1758, my dearfather has fallen asleep in heaven,—his age, sixty-fouryears. By this death Elder Sower became the sole owner ofthe immense business concerns of his father. Prior to this he was in charge of the English publications andof the bindery. Now he becomes owner and managerof the estate.
