RED-BREASTED THRUSH. 183 Plumage olive brown, underneath rufous; head of the adultblackish, more or less spotted with brown below, and of anashy brown tint above in the young. Measurement.—Length nine inches and four lines; beak twelvelines; tail three inches and six lines; feet fifteen lines; toe withclaw twelve lines and a half; extent of wings fourteen inches andeight lines. This is a North American species, where it rangesas far as Hudsons Bay. It is only an accidentalvisitor to Europe. According to Temininck it has beenkilled frequently in Germany; on the testimony ofBrehm it is recorded as having been killed near Vienna;and M. de Selys Longchamps thinks that the specimenindicated by Schinz of Tardus rufus, as having beenkilled in England is referable to this species. Whetherthis latter remark be true or not I cannot say, butas we know nothing of its habits in Europe, I havemuch pleasure in introducing the following graphic andinteresting account of it from Fauna Boreali Americ
