Summary[edit]
DescriptionA lichen (Cladonia species) - geograph.org.uk - 1202893.jpg |
English: A lichen (Cladonia species). This is one of the red-fruited Cladonia species (see 1190489); some fruits were present, both here and nearby, but they were rather small and inconspicuous.
The stalks (podetia) seen here were 4 or 5 cm high, and some were deformed and longitudinally fissured. The smaller leafy structures at their base (the basal squamules) were large (up to 1 cm across), and were orange-brown in places. The group shown here was growing on the ground, but other examples of the same species were growing on top of an old dry-stone wall a few metres away. They are located beside a path through Nobleston Woods, in a damp spot that is, compared to the open moor nearby, relatively shaded and sheltered. [I originally suggested that these were Cladonia sulphurina. I later made a re-examination of fresh material, including examination in UV light and some simple chemical tests, but the results were inconclusive; the species was therefore not positively identified.] |
