| Description |
English: A lichen - Collema flaccidum. Compare another Collema species which was growing nearby: 1054150 (that article also discusses other features of the genus Collema).
C. flaccidum lacks the pattern of ridges that is present in C. furfuraceum. It is also covered in tiny rod-like structures (isidia) as well as numerous little lobules. These lobules apparently develop from the isidia: the "isidia become flattened and lobate as they mature" [F.S.Dobson, "Lichens - An Illustrated Guide to the British and Irish Species"]. The same work notes that this species is "frequent on damp, mainly acid rocks often among mosses or by waterfalls". The specimen in this photo was growing in a depression in a rock on the upper part of the beach, along with some mosses (the margins of which are visible at the top and the lower right of the photograph). |
