| Description |
English: A lichen - Physcia adscendens. A few small patches of this species are visible in another photo (showing lichens growing on the same rock): 1042823.
However, this is a more extensive patch of P. adscendens. The cilia (hair-like structures) are clearly visible. The ends of the lobes curl over into hood-like shapes. When viewed through a hand-lens, the insides of the "hoods" appear greenish; they contain powdery reproductive structures called soredia. The colours of lichens vary from species to species, partly because of the different chemicals they contain in their outer layers. Physcia species are not brightly coloured, because they contain the colourless chemical atranorin. For other Physcia species, see: 1066760, 1066763, and 1068085. |
