The battle was won finally by the French through thefortunate arrival of Desaix with reenforcements and theimperturbable courage of the commander-in-chief. Bona-partes coolness was the marvel of those who surroundedhim. At the moment when the dead and the dying coveredthe earth, the Consul was constantly braving death. NAPOLEON THE GREAT CROSSING MOUNT ST. BERNARD, MAY, 180O. Engraved by Antonio Gilbert in 1809, under the direction of Longhi, afterportrait painted by David in 1805.
