| Description |
English: A memorial in Tweedsmuir Parish Churchyard This memorial is dedicated to the men who lost their lives during the construction of Talla Reservoir. Thirty seems a high number of fatalities but there would have been no health and safety regulations in those days. The inscription reads:-
TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO DIED DURING THE PROGRESS OF THE TALLA WATER WORKS 1895-1905 OF WHOM OVER THIRTY ARE INTERRED IN THIS CHURCHYARD ERECTED BY THEIR FELLOW-WORKMEN AND OTHERS 4 men died accidentally during the 10 year construction period of the reservoir while 40 more died from natural causes. (My thanks to site visitor J Arnott for this additional information). |
