dsteeple at the east end of the house is the principal objectwhich engages the eye of the beholder: and whether weconsider its comely proportions, or its style of finish, or itsimmense height, towering a? it does 264 feet into the air,it must be considered a noble specimen of architecture,and a fine ornament to that part of the city. ST. MARKS CHURCH—(Episcopal,) STUVVESANT-STREET, EAST OF THE BOWERY. Erected in 1799.Si. Marks Church is built of smooth stone, of a darkgray colour. It measures about 100 feet by 66. A school: room and vestry are attached to the rear, occupying aboutI a third of the width of the building, and running out some ,I thirty or forty feet. The steeple is on the front of the ;building facing the south, and is very lofty. It was not Ibuilt in its present form until 1826. The exterior of the church is plain, and has, at first view, rather an antiquelook ; but it has a very venerable appearance, and as awhole, is in good keeping with the purposes for which it is

It stands on the former estate of Petrus Stuy.vesant, the last of the Dutch governors, and his remainslie in a vault under the church : a brown tablet on the eastside of the church, outside, marks the place. The re-mains of Col. Henry Sloughter, one of the English govern,ors, lie in the same vault, and those of Gov. Daniel D.Tompkins, in another near by. The heads of three dy-nasties, Dutch, English and American, are thus reposingin peace together. This church is in a very flourishingcondition. The Rev. Dr. Anthon is the present minister. ST. GEORGES CHURCH—(Efiscofal,) CORNER OF BEEKMAN AND CLIFF STREETS. Erected in 1752.This building was originally a chapel of Trinity Church,and continued in this relation until the year 1811. Hencethe spot it occupies was formerly called Chapel Hill,*and the street in front, Chapel-street. The vicinitywas, at that time, a crowded and badly built part of thecity.
