INTRODUCTION :*&£ N the forty-first anniversary of the battle of * \)lj ^ort ^u^son ^ay 27, 1904, there was*>>^2X* unveiled in Memorial Hall, in the State 11 ir^ rill House, in Boston, a statue in bronze of Major GeneralWilliam Francis Bartlett. The ceremonies were brief but impressive. In thebeautiful circular hall of Sienna marble, its balcony raildraped with heavy festoons of laurel, and with gloriesof flags above each portal, with its scores of tatteredbattle-flags silently proclaiming the noble patriotism dis-played in the struggle for the Union, and its splendidmural paintings of events conspicuous in the history ofMassachusetts, there was gathered a large assemblage in-cluding the first representatives of every walk of lifein the Commonwealth, official, military, professional andbusiness. Colonel Charles Shaler was specially detailed by theSecretary of War to represent the United States Armyat the dedication. There were present also survivors of the three Massa-chuse
