The economic and thehuman conditions of North America will therefore bevery different from those of Africa, and will be morecomparable with those of Europe. A glance at the map will show that the continentcontains three great physical divisions— (i) The Western Highlands ; (ii) The lower Eastern Highlands and their marginalcoastal plains; (iii) The Lowlands, occupying the trough betweenthem.The Western Ilii^/iliinds.—These highlands form agreat cordillcran system of north-south running ranges,enclosing high plateaus, which in many respects is com-parable to the east and west highland belt whichstretches from Asia Minor to China (see p. 285). It ispart of the highland belt which forms the marginallands of the Pacific Ocean.
