ase, and a similar effect is brought aboutby the habitual maintenance of the erect posture. Hence, the disease is verycommon in persons who are compelled to stand much. Yarix of the hemor-rhoidal veins genei-ally depends upon habitual distension of the rectum and fre«-quent straining in defecation. The causes of varicocele are still imperfectlyunderstood, although there is reason to believe that the disease is most commonlydeveloped under the influence of onanism, and other mechanical obstruction cal-culated to weaken the spermatic veins. A natural predisposition to varicose enlargement occasionally exists in certainindividuals ; the veins seem to be unusually large and feeble, and to becometortuous and dilated under the most trifling obstacles to the onward movement■of their contents. When this is the case, the disease often occurs simultaneouslyin different parts of the body, superficial as well as deep. The effects of varicose veins vary accoiding to the situation of the malady.

In the more aggravated cases, ulceration of the integumentsis apt to take place, commencing usually at one particular spot on the inner sur-face of the limb, and gradually progressing until a large sore is established, called, from this circumstance, the varicose ulcer, which is always difiBcult to heal, andwhich occasionally extends into the enlarged veins, thus causing copious, if notfatal, hemorrhage. In the spermatic veins, the disease may give rise to atrophyof the testicle, and to distressing neuralgic pains; while in the hemorrhoidal itleads to the formation of piles, and other disagreeable symptoms. Although the development of varix is generally slow, cases occasionally occurin whi
