Physiognomy No. 1. This represents terminal dementia after twenty-four years of Insanity. The acci-dental attitude of upturned eyes might suggest some emotion which in fact does notexist. It illustrates an automatic remnant of devout expression, which has absolutelyno intellectual counterpart, and similar automatic traits of facial mobility are not un-common indementia. Chronic types of insane physiognomy represent feelings of pride,disgust, anxiety, mock benevolence and condescension, hatred, andbrutal ferocity, and there are unquestionably animal-like reversionsof physiognomy to be detected when the more human forms ofexpression have been effaced by disease.15
