When the Persians captured the city, a. d. 6ii, the Church ofSt. Mary escaped destruction. Omar, upon entering Jerusalemin a. d. 636, prayed in it (it appears then to have been called theChurch of the Resurrection), and the spot on which he knelt isstill shown. About a century and a half later, the church beingin ruins, El-Mahdi, the third Khalif of the Abassidean dynasty,,ordered it to be rebuilt as a mosque. Upon the capture of thecity by the Crusaders it was restored to its uses as a Christianchurch, and was variously called the Palace, Porch, or Templeof Solomon. The present mosque is built in the form of a basilica of sevenaisles, and is 272 feet long, and 184 feet wide.
