At two oclock the whale-boat was fent to found and examine the bay. In the fpaceof an hour flie returned, and the officer who was in herreported that the fhips could ride in it with fafety. Onthis I hauled in for it, and anchored at four oclock intwenty fathoms water over a muddy bottom. We mooredwith the beft bower in twenty-one fathoms over the/Imie bottom. In running into the bayjuft off the Southpoint, we had fevcn and eight fathoms water over abottom of black mud and land. This bank appeared torun nearly acrofs the mouth of the bay, and, aiter paftingit, we deepened tlie water to twenty-one fathoms, in whichdepth we anchored. On looking round the bay, I thought I could ^ ^^ ^^ perceive it to take a iLort turn round a point nearly at the » bottom, on which I went accompanied by Captain Dixon April.to examine it. We carried good and regular foundings to ^^^^^y^the faid point, and lound that a fhip could lie in fourand a half and five fathoms water, with the South point ofthe bay jufc fliut in with this point at about a cables lengthfrom the fhore. The inner point may be takew clofe onboard, as it is quite bold; the bottom of the bay isflat. Before I left the fliip we were vifited by five canoes,fome with one man in, and others v/ith two; but I wasrather furpriled to find that they had not the flcin of anyanimal among them.
