He was the man for those extraordinarytimes, and he did a titanic job in the faceof immense difficulties. One thing more. During recent years anodd myth has developed: a myth which saysthat Stanton was the consummate villain ofAmerican history, that he actively connivedat Lincolns murder, and that the wholeFords Theater tragedy was largely of his Jdoing. In some way this myth has attainedwide circulation, so that it has actuallybecome impossible to make a speech on theCivil War without having someone ask thequestion: Did Stanton have Lincoln mur-dered? Mr. Hyman wastes no time with thismyth. He sets forth the facts underlyingthe assassination, and then, in a curt foot-note, remarks that those who support thisodd theory offer conclusions from • thesefacts which seem unsupportable. Anyway, here is Stanton, done to the life:a thoughtful, serious, well-written biographywhich is about as final as anything we arelikely to get. It is a wholly admirable andsatisfactory piece of work. ^^jjH^
