From the Lincoln National Life Foundation Edwin McMasters Stanton (1814-1869) wielded con-siderable power as Lincolns Secretary of War, and theconflicts generated by the War Departments ad-ministration of the recruitment program for blacksoldiers are proof. Senator Hicks and many historianssince saw Stanton as a political radical.
