From the Lincoln National Life Foundation Edwin McMasters Stanton (1814-1869) wielded con-siderable power as Lincolns Secretary of War, and theconflicts generated by the War Departments ad-ministration of the recruitment program for blacksoldiers are proof. Senator Hicks and many historianssince saw Stanton as a political radical. Yet he was notvery politically-minded, having held no major publicoffice before 1860, and he was not very radical early inhis career.
