There was no ambiguity in the follo^ving despatch which GeneralMcClellan received from General Halleck, October 6th : The President directs that you cross the Potomac and give battle to the enemy ordrive him South. Your army must move now while the roads are good. To a friend the President said: With all McClellans failino^s asa soldier, he is a pleasant and scholarly gentleman. He is an admira-ble engineer, but he seems to have a special talent for a stationaryenginey (*) Concealed by a fog that hung along the Potomac, General Stuart,commanding 1800 Confederate cavalry, crossed that stream, rode north-ward, and in the evening entered Chambersburg, Pa. He spent the night there, burned the railroad buildings, turned eastward,reached Emmettsburg the next evening
